I think Italy is blessed with more beautiful countryside than most places, but you’ll need to get outside of the big tourist cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice to see it. I’ve been lucky to visit several small towns and vineyards that are not on your normal tourist routes.
I took this photograph one afternoon while visiting Panzano in Chianti, a very small town in the popular region of Tuscany. Located in the hills, the landscape is punctuated by cypress trees and vineyards. In the spring, poppies and irises bloom on hillsides.
Panzano is located midway between Florence and Sienna, and there are many small wineries where you can stop for tastings scattered along the narrow, winding roads. To get there you’ll need a car, or you can take the bus from Florence, about an hours ride.
Take an armchair tour of Panzano in my article, Panzano in Pictures.
