Postcard: Piazza San Michele in Foro, Lucca

by Penny Sadler

San Michele in Foro, Lucca, Italy

This piazza, named for the 12th century church of San Michele, is the site of what was once a Roman market. It was the center of all public and political life. Today it is lined with shops, restaurants, and other businesses and is one of the best people watching spots in Lucca.

I spent a few hours here just hanging out, taking photographs and enjoying watching the world go by.
You can see more photographs of this piazza and the church of San Michele in my photo essay, Inside Lucca.

Lucca is a walled city in Tuscany accessible by train from Florence or Pisa. It was once a wealthy medieval city built upon the silk trade. It was also on a religious pilgrimage route and many people left their money in banks there, never to return.

Lucca looks a really beautiful city. I have been to Florence and Pisa and still regret not having been to Lucca during that trip.

It is. I only spent about 4 or 5 hours there. I took the train from Florence and it takes 3 hours to get there. I mainly hung around this piazza, then met a friend for dinner. Not a bad place to spend a few hours. 🙂 I’d like to go back with more time though. I really haven’t even begun to explore Tuscany.

Oh wow Penny, that’s beautiful. I checked out your other photos as well and that’s someplace I would love to visit. I could stroll down those streets forever just gazing up at the beautiful buildings. Yep, I’ve never been to that part of the country but it’s some place I’d love to go some day.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Awesome.
