Why are sunsets so captivating?
Perhaps it’s simply that we take so much of life for granted, a sunset smacks us in the eyeballs and says, “hey wake up and enjoy the beauty all around you.” Color captivates us and speaks to our hearts.
Depending on where you are in the world, you may not be able to admire the sunset; viewing requires some wide open space. So even though the sun sets every day, we can’t always see enough to admire and appreciate it.
The color and beauty of the earth is undeniable at sunset. Unlike sunrise, which is more about the light, sunset is about the color. At sunset, the earth’s atmosphere becomes visible, as the sun’s rays combine with dust and other atmospheric matter; this paints a picture in the western sky.

7 Stunning Sunsets Around The World
Costa Rica – Adventures of a Carry-on
There’s nothing quite like watching the sunset from the deck of a ship. In the opening photo, we were leaving the Port of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and were not far out to sea when I captured this. One of a series of shots of the sun setting in a glorious blaze behind the mountains, it was an experience I’ll never forget.
Rome, Italy – Adventures of a Carry-on
The Spanish Steps are one of the top tourist attractions is Rome. At the top is the piazza and church, Trinita dei Monti, and it was from here, that I took this photograph. Rome is one of the best places in the world for capturing a beautiful sunset; there are no skyscrapers obstructing the view!
Maui – Traveling with Sweeney
We had just arrived at the Grand Wailea Resort in Maui earlier in the afternoon. The hotel is wonderful and we were feeling very lucky to be there. When the sun began to set as we walking around the lush grounds, we were compelled to stop and watch from start to finish. I love how the palm trees and reflections in the pond add to the beauty and romance of the sunset.
Key West – Adventures of a Carry-on
Gliding through the turquoise waters surrounding Key West, Florida on a sailboat looks like heaven on earth. Watching the sunset from the shore was amazing too, but I’d like to try it from a sailboat next time.
Sedona, Arizona – 1Dad1Kid
This was taken in Sedona, Arizona, USA. It was our last spring vacation road trip before we left the US to travel the world indefinitely 3 years ago. The views varied greatly depending which way you turned. Breathtaking and inspiring may be clichés, but they certainly applied to the sunset that day.
Lake Michigan – Wandering Educators
Sunset at Lake Michigan is always something special. We live on Michigan’s Sunset Coast, so there are plenty of opportunities for great sunsets – which can be awash in color, slowly muting silver, or a cloudy day where the light just fades. This sunset is from the beach in Manistee, Michigan, where we were waiting for the 4th of July fireworks to begin. Although that fireworks display is spectacular, this year the sunset stole the show.
Dallas, Texas – Adventures of a Carry-on
Texas is known for big skies and wide open spaces. There’s nothing quite like getting off the ground for a new perspective; from 560 feet in the air, you get a nice clear view. When the horizon is flat, you also get a sunset that seems to last forever, as this one did.
